Emily’s Last Obsession
Psychological Suspense
Adult Sexual Content
Very limited implied violence.
The Story
John, Emily, Karen, and Tori all work for a clandestine organization dedicated to bringing “social justice” to business leaders and politicians through sting operations. While John has an ongoing relationship with each of his co-workers, Emily, Karen, and Tori have their personal motivations to be with John. What should be a predictable outcome is all but certain.
Behind the Story
Throughout this novel is a glimpse into the minds of the four primary characters. They each have the ability to see imperfection in others, but lack that same insight into their personal life. As a psychologist, John explores this problem with each of the women but rarely applies his insight to himself. Each of our characters recognize at some level their actions have consequences, but that understanding does little to change their actions.
Freud described three primary aspects of our personality. The Super Ego was the moral voice that tells us the things we should be doing. The “id” is that part of our personality that tells us those things we want to do regardless of social acceptability. The last part of the personality was the “ego” which tries to balance those things we should be doing versus those things we simply want to do to fulfill our basic desires and wants. Karen, Tori and Emily each represent one of the three parts of the human personality as described by Freud.
Emily's Last Obsession takes an invasive look at self delusion as well as failed relationships. It takes a much broader look at societies ability to justify actions and ignore the idea that our actions often lead to not so desirable outcomes. It should be a thought provoking novel allowing each of us to examine our personal life in the context of our own self denial.
